Last Friday, Facebook signed a new deal with Warner Music Group that allows its users to include music from Warner’s music catalogue in the original recorded videos they share on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Oculus.

With this deal in place, Facebook will now pay Warner when users post videos featuring music from one of their artists. Warner’s collection of musical talent is vast and broad, and stretches back decades. Warner’s family of labels, which includes Atlantic Records, Parlophone, Big Beat, Reprise, and many more classic distributors, will add to Facebook’s evolving music network as they attempt to draw more original creators to the platform.

"Our partnership with Facebook will help expand the universe of music streaming and create supplementary revenue for artists," said Ole Obermann, chief digital officer at Warner Music Group.

"Fan-created video is one of the most personal, social and often viral ways that music is enjoyed, but its commercial potential is largely untapped."

Facebook has similar licensing deals with Universal Music Group and Sony/ATV Music Publishing, meaning that its users are now able to choose from a massive collection of music to include in their videos. These deals are evident of Facebook’s desire to capitalize on the growing trend of video usage online.

Watching videos online continues to increase as the most popular way in which people use the internet. According to a 2017 report by Cisco, the global technology conglomerate, video traffic will be 82 percent of all consumer Internet traffic by 2021, up from 73 percent in 2016.

The news is exciting for creators of all kinds, as adding music to videos makes content more engaging and entertaining. While Facebook and Youtube continue to fight for user engagement, securing the rights to such extensive music libraries that grant creative freedom to its users shows that Facebook is taking major steps in positioning its platform as a home for original content.
